The basics

What goes into a payslip?

A payslip sets out what an employee earned in a period and what was withheld from it. The earnings side typically carries basic pay, house rent allowance, conveyance and any special or performance allowances. The deductions side carries provident fund, professional tax, income tax withheld at source and any advances being recovered.

The difference between the two is net pay — the figure that actually reaches the employee's account. Getting the split right matters for more than the employee: it is what your statutory filings, provident fund returns and tax deducted at source statements are built on.

The components

Earnings and deductions explained

Basic pay
The fixed core of the salary. Most statutory calculations — provident fund in particular — are computed as a percentage of this figure rather than of the total.
House rent allowance
Paid towards accommodation. Part of it can be exempt from income tax where the employee actually pays rent and can evidence it.
Special allowance
The balancing component that brings the structure up to the agreed cost to company once the other heads are fixed.
Provident fund
A retirement contribution deducted from the employee and matched by the employer, remitted monthly against the employee's universal account number.
Professional tax
A state-level levy on employment. The amount and the slabs differ by state, and some states do not levy it at all.
Tax deducted at source
Income tax withheld from salary each month against the employee's projected annual liability, remitted to the government on their behalf.
